The Healing Power of Garlic

Standard

“The shared meal elevates eating from a mechanical process of fueling the body
to a ritual of family and community, from the mere animal biology to an act of culture.”
….Michael Pollan,

The Art of Healing with Coconut Oil

Garlic (Allium sativum), is an herb that belongs to the onion genus Allium. It is closely related to the onion, chive, leek, shallot, & rakkyo. Garlic has been used for 1000’s of years for both culinary & healing purposes.

Garlic is a holistic immune system boosting herb. It is antiviral, antifungal, & also a potent antibacterial.

  • Garlic is a very rich source of organosulfur compounds, which are currently under investigation for their potential to prevent and treat disease.
  • Garlic also contains many other health promoting substances such as arginine – rich proteins, selenium, flavonoids, & oligosaccharides.
  • In order to experience the full healing power of garlic, the fresh clove must be crushed or chopped, in order to stimulate the release of the enzyme allinase. Allinase catalyzes the formation of allicin. Sulfenic acid, which is produced as the body digest allicin, reacts with dangerous free radicals faster than any other known substance..
  • Since cooking can inactivate alliinase, some scientists recommend letting garlic stand for ten minutes after chopping or crushing before cooking it.
  • It is important to use fresh, local, organic garlic. You will not recieve the full health promoting benefit of garlic if you use store bought jars, powedered, or dried types. Prevendisease.com shares that tIndependent Lab Tests have show that high levels of lead, arsenic, & added sulfites were found in at least two supermarket-brand imported garlic powders.
